Nishan is Civil Society Organization undertaking action oriented field research, policy analysis & activities dedicated to empowerement and mobilization of masses to demand accountability from people in position of power and works through thousands of its community volunteers and community leaders spread across the towns and villages of North Indian states of Delhi,Punjab, Haryana, UP,Rajastahn, Himachal Pradesh,Uttra Khand with regards to Power to People Campaign and covers all the 31 Indian states and its 7 union territories on Police Reforms Peoples' Perspective Campaign.

We beileve that citizen is the focal point of a constitutional democracy governed by rule of law, the citizen is not mere subject of state in democracy but holder of rights and bearer of obligations and jointly responsible for the smooth running of the state and society. Democracy is not delievered by state institutions and its functionaries but by the citizens, who mandated constitutional democracy.

We do understand that existing functionaries of governance institutions that have been continued long after the departure of colonial rulers neither inherited democratic values nor respect these values and hence did not reform their governance institutions for India's smooth transition to be a true democracy accountable to its people.
